Net Work done by the Gas per Cycle – During the four strokes, W₁ and W₂ are the work done by the gas and W₃ and W₄ are the work done on the gas. Therefore, the net work performed by the engine, W = W₁ + W₂ – W₃ – W₄ = Area ABGE + Area BCHG – Area CDFH – Area ADEF = Area ABCD Thus, net work done by the engine during one cycle is equal to the area enclosed by the indicator diagram of the cycle.
