Physical Properties of Alkyl Halides:
(i) The boiling and melting points of haloalkanes generally increase with increasing molecular size.
(ii) Alkyl halides can exist as gases, liquids, or solids at room temperature, depending on their molecular size and the nature of the halogen atom. For example CH₃, CH₃Cl and CH₃Br.
(iii) Alkyl halides are normally sweet-smelling gases and liquids, whereas odourless in solid state.
(iv) All alkyl halides are slightly soluble in water but completely soluble in organic solvents like benzene, ether and alcohols.
