Properties of Electric Field Lines…

Properties of Electric Field Lines –
(i) Electric lines of force start or diverge out from positive charge and end or converge on negative charge,
(ii) The number of lines originating from a charge is proportional to the magnitude of charge,
(iii) Lines of force never cross or intersect each other because if they cross, then electric field intensity at that point will have two directions which is not possible,
(iv) Electric lines of force have tendency to contract produce attraction between opposite charges and repel each other laterally resulting in repulsion between similar charges,
(v) The tangent to a line of force at any point given the direction of the electric field at that point.
